Konopiště Castle

Konopiště Castle

Konopiště Chateau is located approximately 40 km southeast of Prague near the town of Benešov. It is mainly known as the last residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, whose assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 became the pretext for the outbreak of the First World War.

History of the castle

The castle was probably founded around 1294 by Bishop Tobias of Benešov in Prague as a Gothic fortress inspired by French castles. After the extinction of the Benešovice family in 1327, it passed into the hands of the Šternberks for 275 years.

Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several reconstructions, including Renaissance and Baroque modifications. In 1887, it was purchased by Franz Ferdinand d'Este, who had it rebuilt in a historicist style and turned the surrounding area into a vast 225-hectare landscaped park.

Visitors today can choose from several sightseeing routes. Tours are guided and some have limited capacity, so advance booking is recommended.

Castle Park and Rose Garden

The grounds include a large English park with ponds, statues and romantic nooks and crannies. The Rose Garden, founded by Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie between 1906 and 1913, deserves special attention.

More than 200 species of roses grow on an area of five hectares, complemented by greenhouses with tropical plants. Konopiště is thus a trip that works equally well for history lovers and those who want to enjoy a beautifully landscaped park.
